Premier volet d’une série d’expositions proposée par Elodie Royer et Yoann Gourmel, commissaires invités pour la saison 2011-2012, l’exposition collective « Le sentiment des choses » prend pour point de départ le travail et l’esprit de l’inventeur, artiste, designer, écrivain, illustrateur, graphiste, pédagogue Bruno Munari, « un Peter Pan à l’envergure d’un Léonard », selon l’expression de Pierre Restany.

Déplaçant et déployant dans la vie quotidienne ses recherches continues sur la circulation et l’instabilité des formes, des signes, des couleurs, de la lumière, des mots, des images, il n’a eu de cesse d’allier imagination et méthode, invention logique et intuitive, au sein d’une démarche à la poursuite de l’essentialité des choses. Des premières peintures futuristes des années 1930 aux livres illisibles, des machines inutiles aux fourchettes parlantes, des xérographies originales jusqu’aux structures à haute tension des années 1990, Munari s’est joué toute sa vie avec une grande économie de moyens des catégories et des disciplines, dans une tentative de les fondre dans une seule pratique radicale et généreuse de l’art, incitant chacun à développer sa propre curiosité et créativité.

Plus prospective que rétrospective, cette exposition ne cherche cependant pas tant à mettre l’accent sur son héritage ou ses influences, qu’à remettre en mouvement, en idées et en formes, son travail au milieu d’autres pratiques artistiques. Elle réunit ainsi sur le même plan des peintures, des prototypes, des multiples, des objets design, des livres, des jeux de Munari, et des œuvres d’artistes de différentes générations et nationalités, partageant une attitude et un esprit animés par le jeu, la sincérité, l’économie, la poésie.

Construire puis démonter chaque été pendant dix ans une pyramide en bois au sommet d’une montagne et attendre qu’un éclair vienne la frapper, envoyer quotidiennement des lettres collages à des amis ou à des inconnus, tenir une galerie dans son chapeau, reproduire un mouvement de caméra à l’aide de peintures abstraites, bâtir une maison sur les bases d’une conversation, réaliser des dessins muraux à l’aide d’un ballon de foot, faire des sculptures avec du fil ou à emmener avec soi en voyage sont ainsi certains des gestes et des œuvres que l’on peut y croiser.

Proposant une situation ouverte dont les détours importent davantage que la destination, où le processus et l'expérience partagée priment souvent sur le résultat, cette exposition « en groupe » suggère un frottement conceptuel et sensible de ces différentes pratiques, contemporaines et historiques, dans ce qu’elles ont de commun comme de dissonant. Des démarches individuelles ou collectives qui, dans une sorte de défiance face à la notion d'œuvre d'art comme objet fini et fétichisé, privilégient une relation subjective et fragmentaire à l’œuvre, entendue comme précaire, transitoire, multiple.

On ne connaîtrait « le cœur des choses » qu’à travers les sentiments qu’elles éveillent en nous. C’est ce que formule le mono no aware, principe littéraire japonais, définissant les émotions qui naissent en nous au contact des faits et des choses comme le seul moyen d’en connaître leur substance. « Le sentiment des choses » en est une traduction possible et élusive.

As the first part of a series of exhibitions devised by Elodie Royer and Yoann Gourmel, guest curators for the 2011-2012 season, the collective exhibition The Feeling of Things takes as its point of departure the work and spirit of the inventor, artist, designer, writer, illustrator, graphic designer and teacher, Bruno Munari, “a Peter Pan with the calibre of a Leonardo”, to borrow Pierre Restany’s words.

By shifting and developing, in everyday life, his continuous research into the circulation and instability of forms, signs, colors, light, words, and images, he never ceased to combine imagination and method, logical and intuitive inventiveness, within an approach that focused on the essentialness of things. From the early Futurist paintings of the 1930s to the unreadable books, from the useless machines to the talking forks, from the original xerographies to the high-tension structures of the 1990s, Munari played all his life with categories and disciplines – using conspicuously limited means – in an attempt to blend them into a single radical and generous art praxis, urging everyone to develop their own curiosity and creativity.

For all this, this exhibition, which is more forward- than backward-looking, is not seeking so much to emphasize his legacy and his influences, as to set his work back in motion, in terms of ideas and forms, in the midst of other art practices. It thus brings together on the same level paintings, prototypes, multiples, design objects, books and games produced by Munari, and works of artists of different generations and nationalities, sharing an attitude and a spirit informed by playfulness, sincerity, spareness, and poetry.

Constructing and then dismantling a wooden pyramid on top of a mountain, every summer for ten years, and waiting for a lightning to strike it; sending daily collage letters to friends and strangers; carrying a gallery under a hat; reproducing a camera movement with the help of abstract paintings; building a house on the bases of a conversation; producing wall drawings with the help of a football; making sculptures with yarn or to take on journeys with – these, then, are just some of the gestures and works one can come upon in this exhibition.

By proposing an open situation where detours contribute more than the destination, and where process and shared experience often take precedence over results, this group exhibition suggests a conceptual and perceptible friction between these different activities, at once contemporary and historical, both in what they have in common, and in what divides them. Approaches at once individual and collective which, in a kind of defiance of the notion of artwork as finished and fetishized object, show a preference for a subjective and fragmentary relationship to the work, understood as precarious, fleeting, and multiple.

We only get to know “the heart of things” through the feelings they arouse in us. This is what the Japanese literary principle mono no aware posits, defining the emotions which come into being in us when we are in contact with facts and things as the sole way of getting to know their substance. “The feeling of things” is a possible and elusive translation of this principle.

Chitti Kasemkitvatana & Pratchaya Phinthong, Messy Sky, n° 00, 2011 - 2012

Messy Sky is an expansive publication, fluid and adjustable edited by the artists Chitti Kasemkitvatana and Pratchaya Phinthong. Loose content pages, digital files and a hand-finished sculptural object are available for arrangement by the user. The forms can be stored virtually or practically and the information retrieved or produced according to desire.

Messy Sky is a vague translation of 'Rok-Fah', the Thai name of the wood - Terminalia Alata Heyne Ex Roth- used as the magazine’s binder. This wood is commonly used for house building and tool handles in Thailand, as it is tough and durable. Messy Sky resonates functionally and poetically.

In the context of the exhibition, the first issue of "Messy Sky" hosts the publication "The Feeling of things" gathering amongst others contributions by the invited artists, designed by Coline Sunier and Charles Mazé.This issue is freely downloadable during the time of the exhibition on: www.messysky.com

Aux alentours de l’an mil, dame Sei Shônagon, artiste conceptuelle de compagnie à la cour de l’empereur du Japon, dresse dans ses Notes de chevet la chronique de son époque. Dans ce blog avant l’heure, elle compile par associations des « choses qui n’offrent rien d’extraordinaire au regard mais qui prennent une importance exagérée quand on écrit leur nom », des « choses qui ne servent plus à rien, mais qui rappellent le passé », des « choses qu’il vaut mieux faire deux fois ».
Elle observe et commente la vie à la cour, les sujets oubliés et ceux qui font l’actualité, les jugements de valeur et les normes esthétiques en vigueur. Ces remarques de l'an mil offrent autant d’énoncés fragmentaires pour avancer sur le chemin de l’art contemporain.

Dans ce cours, des « choses auxquelles on ne peut guère se fier » côtoient celles « qui sont les plus belles du monde ». A travers un parcours où les détours comptent davantage que la destination s'élabore une manière active de transmettre et d’apprendre.

Location, location, …dislocation.

This exhibition brings together artwork from and about Paris, France. Most of the artists here call that city home; a few others live in the US but have been influenced by time spent there. These two groups fill different roles in this show: the non-French are showing work about Paris, but the French are just making their work, without necessarily considering Paris as the background. Together, this adds up to an off-kilter picture of the effect of context on its subject.

Context and subject guide this exhibition in shifting ways. For one thing, “Tableaux Parisiens” gathers artists who are self-consciously distorting the contexts within which their works are formed: Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster’s video speaks about the strange feeling of trying to make sense of a foreign place, in this case the city of Brasilia, in Brazil. Géraldine Longueville and Mark Geffriaud’s project is based on a cross-country trip through the US in 2007, during which they executed artworks assigned to them by other artists back in France, who were imagining what Mark and Géraldine might encounter on their long drive.

Their project also marks a reversal between context and subject: after all, Longueville and Geffriaud have enlisted other artists as their medium. Their subject, we could say, is the subjectivity of these other people, who have been given the task of imagining a context. Elodie Royer and Yoann Gourmel have performed a similar dislocation, only their project is specifically focused on the destination of Marfa. They asked their six contributors to make the Post-It notes that are placed on the computers in the gallery. The Post-Its are an independent curatorial project inside of “Tableaux Parisiens.”

The exhibition repeatedly exploits the dislocated meanings of the word “subject.” Joianne Bittle’s work in the entryway includes - among other things - materials from the archive of Raphaele Shirley, producing an imbalance in its historiographic layering of references. Shirley herself contributes a text about the same archive, which documents the opening of an art performance space in the early 2000’s. Again, subject displaced into archive, displaced into subject.

Shirley’s performance space transformed an old peep-show building into an avant-garde art center. The profound contextual role that architecture plays is another path through “Tableaux Parisiens.” Gonzalez-Foerster’s video includes Oscar Niemeyer buildings in Brasilia; a Niemeyer project in Paris, built for the French Communist Headquarters, is depicted in the architectural photography of James Ewing. Nina Safainia, a practicing architect in Paris, contributes a pensée sur l’architecture. And Joianne Bittle’s work in the main gallery pivots off all these facets of the built environment: the painted panels were originally studies for a larger painting completed in Paris in 2010, as part of a project that Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster did for the fashion house Balenciaga, which was inspired by the landscape in Brazil. Dislocation indeed!

Of course, there is no architecture without landscape. But that does not necessarily make the landscape any more “natural” than the buildings it contains. With great economy, Aurélien Mole’s sculptural photograph captures the feedback loop in our relationship to the landscape. Christina Hejtmanek’s nine sunset variations show us that even our encounter with the sublime is subject to careful calibration and manipulation.

From manipulating the landscape to manipulating its bounty: Sébastien Pluot will be cooking a meal in Paris, to be broadcast into the gallery by Skype. This performance brings a visceral edge to the distance between the two locations of Paris and Marfa. Fabien Vallos, a philosopher and culinary historian in Paris, contributes the menu from a recent meal he served, along with a brief historical explanation of its references, creating a deep divide between the text and its referent.

Sarah Butler’s work divides not the text from its referent, but the textual field from itself: after teaching herself to write backwards and left-handed, the curved mirror re-reverses the language back into legibility. The mirror is a prominent device in “Tableaux Parisiens,” for its ability to dislocate and transform its subject. Graham Guerra’s large, mirrored print of Manet’s Olympia is overdrawn with a trifurcating example of a very early fractal. Bittle’s mirrors make reference to both the optical tricks of classical dioramas and the encompassing reflections that surround any visitor to a fashion boutique.

Facing mirrors create infinite reflections, in two directions. Jordan Kantor’s book and video are based on the single direction of a self-consuming series of copies. Kantor xeroxed a photo of a painting by Degas (depicting Manet and his wife (which Manet had cropped, cutting out Mrs. Manet)), then he (Kantor) copied the copy, and then copied that copy, (…), until the image disappeared. The void opens and swallows history. Yann Serandour opens the void from a different angle, enlarging Yves Klein’s blank monochrome field (which first appeared alongside the famous Leap Into the Void) into a work in itself.

The blank field gets a final twist in the work by A Constructed World. The absence their floor mat declares needs no further articulation from this text, especially in the context of a deconsecrated church.

Conçu comme une bulle noire, un site internet au contenu évanescent, ce quatrième numéro de Rosa B. envisage la science-fiction comme un phénomène culturel global dont, pour reprendre les termes de l’auteur, critique et scénariste Serge Lehman que l’on retrouve au sommaire de ce numéro, « les manifestations ont dès l’origine débordé la fiction pour s’étendre à des domaines aussi divers que l’urbanisme, la philosophie, la religion, et tout le spectre des sciences ». La science fiction comme virus ou comme « sensibilité » pour la pensée spéculative traversant des pratiques multiples. Au-delà de thèmes qui lui seraient propres, la SF y est ainsi considérée comme un vecteur de réflexivité collective sur le présent, un laboratoire susceptible de générer des formes migrant dans des domaines variés, dont le plus petit dénominateur commun serait l’expérience esthétique de l’émerveillement et le vertige – l’estrangement – cognitif qu’elles peuvent susciter. Réunissant des contributions de critiques et d’auteurs de science-fiction (Pierre Jouan, Paul di Filippo, Bruce Sterling, Serge Lehman), d’une héroïne de fiction (Marie Mathématique), d’artistes (Bruno Persat, Július Koller), d’un architecte radical (Piero Frassinelli), d’une historienne et théoricienne du design (Alexandra Midal) et d’une journaliste aventurière (Elizabeth Antébi), ce numéro propose une navigation au sein d’un corpus élargi afin de susciter un sentiment de science-fiction, non cloisonné aux propriétés d’un genre ou d’une étiquette éditoriale.

The event horizon: rosa b. #4

Devised like a black hole, a website with vanishing contents, this fourth issue of Rosa B. sees science fiction as a global cultural phenomenon, whose “outward signs”—to borrow the words of the author, critic and scriptwriter Serge Lehman, one of the contributors to this issue—“have, from the outset, gone beyond fiction and spread to fields as diverse as urbanism, philosophy, religion, and the whole gamut of the sciences”. Science fiction as a virus, or as a “sensibility” for the speculative thinking that runs through many different practices. Beyond the themes peculiar to it, SF is thus here regarded as a vehicle of collective reflexivity, a laboratory capable of giving rise to forms shifting into various domains, where the lowest common denominator is the aesthetic sense of wonder and the cognitive dizziness—estrangement—which they can bestir. By bringing together contributions from critics and authors of science fiction (Pierre Jouan, Paul di Filippo, Bruce Sterling, Serge Lehman), a fictional character (Marie Mathématique), artists (Bruno Persat, Július Koller), a radical architect (Piero Frassinelli), a historian and theoretician of design (Alexandra Midal) and an adventurous journalist (Elizabeth Antébi), this issue offers a trip within a broadened corpus, aimed at arousing a feeling of science fiction, not confined to the properties of any genre or publishing label.

Un matin de printemps, une maison à la campagne avec la forêt pour seule voisine.

Une partie d’échec entamée attend son dénouement sur la table du jardin. Livres et objets divers.

Un morceau de Robert Wyatt sort d’une fenêtre ouverte. Dans la cuisine, Susan prépare le café. Walter dort encore. Sur la terrasse, Douglas, Richard et Julo fument leur première cigarette de la journée en se laissant éblouir par le soleil.

Susan (par la fenêtre) : Où est Al ?

Richard : Parti avec Hollis au marché. Ils doivent aussi récupérer au magasin de bricolage le projecteur qui a lâché hier.

Douglas : Oh non, ça va encore prendre des plombes.

Julo : Des fils à plombes, tu veux dire.

Sourires sur les visages, dépit de Susan qui arrive sur la terrasse, portant un plateau avec des tasses et une casserole fumante de café qu’elle pose sur la table en bois.

Susan : On n’a plus beaucoup de temps.

Richard : Je dois encore trouver un titre pour le wall drawing. Ça pourrait être ce poème que j’ai écrit avant de venir ici. Ça s’appelle « Je crois qu’elle m’aime bien ».

Il sort un carnet de sa poche et lit à voix haute :

« J’ai une ampoule électrique Maison de l’Harmonie longue

durée dans mes toilettes une 75 watts en verre

dépoli.

Ca fait maintenant plus de deux ans

que j’habite dans le même appartement

et cette ampoule continue tout simplement de brûler.

Je crois qu’elle m’aime bien. »

Douglas : Moi j’en suis sûr. En tout cas Su, ne t’inquiète pas. Hollis travaille avec Walter à une lumière qui se fige autour d’objets vaguement imaginés. Mais, c’est presque fini.

Susan : Je ne m’inquiète pas. Je me demande seulement si nous allons réussir à montrer comment une œuvre est ce qu’elle est, plutôt que de faire apparaître ce qu’elle peut signifier.

Susan, l’air pensif, regarde les arbres à sa droite d’où des sons d’oiseaux s’éveillent.

Elle reprend : Rendre les œuvres - et par analogie, notre propre expérience de spectateurs - plus réelles à nos yeux, sans passer par le commentaire ou la justification. Nous devons essayer de nous libérer de la pensée du contenu pour goûter la chose elle-même.

Walter arrive dans un Yukata, qu’il a rapporté du Japon, un verre de Martini à la main. Il ne ressemble à rien.

Walter : Plomplidoo !

Susan : Bien dormi ?

Walter : Avec la sensation de tristesse que se produisait une averse de météores pendant mon sommeil. En plus, j’ai rêvé de couleurs. Quand j’étais petit, j’avais peur de la couleur jaune. Dans mes rêves, elle était toujours menaçante. Le jaune c’était mon cauchemar, je n’ai jamais compris pourquoi… Bref… Mais du coup, je viens d’écrire un truc. Attendez, je vais le chercher.

Il part.

Ruth (revenant de la forêt) : Il y a une certaine ambiguïté là-bas, parmi les campanules.

Richard : Bonjour Ruth. Tu t’es levée tôt.

Ruth : Tu sais, ce que veut le poète, c’est un lac au milieu de sa phrase. (Un lac apparaît.) Et puis en arrosant les pensées, j’ai trouvé une couleur qui fait venir à l’esprit le parfum de menthe poivrée. Une odeur qui stimule la mémoire, paraît-il.

Walter revient en courant, il s’est changé, et arbore un t-shirt sur lequel on peut lire : « Si j’étais matière, je me colorerais ».

Walter : La couleur ne peut surgir isolément que dans l’imagination, sa pureté étant altérée par son rapport avec l’espace, là où naissent la lumière et l’ombre. Il fait une pause.

Ca sent la menthe non ?

Susan : Il y a ce matin quelque chose de vague qui flotte… Vous ne trouvez pas ? Nos paroles n’ont pas de but précis. Ou peut-être alors une multitude. Ce qui exclut toute idée d’énigme. Le vague n’a jamais rien eu de négatif. Au contraire, le vague est vivant.

Richard : Dans cette histoire vague, nous tenons chacun notre rôle. Le mien, ce sont les nuages.

La voiture apparaît sur le chemin. La voix d’Arthur Russell sort des fenêtres ouvertes tandis qu’Al et Hollis sortent de la voiture.

Hollis : On a de quoi faire un super barbecue. Le projecteur est mort mais nous sommes passés par une brocante et on a acheté plein de trucs pour projeter les idées qu’on a trouvées sur le chemin.

Il ouvre le coffre de la voiture et en sort un carton plein à craquer.

Al : Alors, quel est le son d’une seule main qui applaudit ?

Hollis en souriant : Al ne parle que sous forme de Kôan zen depuis ce matin.

Richard les interrompant : …d’ailleurs il n’y avait pas de porte.

Douglas : Le monde en est plus ou moins rempli Richard, je ne crois pas qu’il soit nécessaire d’en ajouter aucune. Alors, qu’est-ce vous avez trouvé ?

Al : Des choses qui ne font que passer… des choses dont on néglige souvent la fin… des choses qui n’offrent rien d’extraordinaire au regard et qui prennent une importance exagérée quand on écrit leur nom… des choses qui font naître un doux souvenir du passé.

Hollis : On a croisé Robert qui nous a aussi donné quelque chose qui ne sera jamais rien en particulier. Il vous embrasse. Il passe tout à l’heure. Joli T-shirt Walt.

Walter : Merci. Et la boîte noire, vous l’avez trouvée ?

Al : Non toujours pas. Mais j’ai déniché des plantes épiphytes, un icosaèdre en ébène, une photo de Tcheki le chien, un plan de La Roche-Maurice, une lettre de Boo Boo et un 33 tours des mirrored horsefishes.

Douglas : Bruno va être content, lui qui nous parlait de mémoire, de parties de cache-cache, de séquences invisibles d'ours blancs enchaînés à la banquise fondue, de gestes et de comment on les précède par une image projetée à l'aide de la lumière qu’on a en tête...

Julo : Mais d’ailleurs il est où Bruno ?

Al : Parti avec la lumière quand j’ai appuyé sur l’interrupteur.

The exhibition as it is now is by no means definite. It is rather an exercise or a mental expedition set up in order to think through a couple of things. The first question to think about is: what happens if a word (Distance) which obviously means too many things is not specified, but instead left to levitate on its own, without a context? And if this word is still somehow intelligible even if stripped of all qualities, then how can we use it and how can it function?

A working hypothesis: it can function metaphorically.

Consider the difference between an analogy and a metaphor. An analogy links two things according to a certain shape or feature they share - the moon resembles a face via the round shape of an eye, the form of an arch joints a church with a crack in a mountain. There is thus always a third external element in any analogy, an element which preexists the juxtaposition of words or things. On the other hand, no mediatory element is needed in a metaphor: the sun simply turns out to be a passageway, laughter turns into a mountain. Notions and things lose all qualities they had and become something else altogether, but there is no break in meaning, no void.

So at this point we only have two things structuring the show: an overdetermined word (Distance) and a possible method (Metaphor). And a healthy dose of perplexity. This should be enough for now to look at some things exhibited.

On the XL chapter of his novel Tristram Shandy, Laurence Sterne includes a set of sketches indicating the non-linear path of a well-told story ; narrative digressions appear as deviations from a straight line. Between the curve of forgotten things from Richard Brautigan’s poem and the ones from Tristram Shandy, the works gathered in this exhibition draw the curves of a story derived from a shared living whose linearity remains hypothetical.

In other words.

We walk. We move forward, we come back, we look forward. We live. Alone, alone, alone, with our friends, with our ghosts, at our place, at their places, outside, inside. We learn to get lost. We try to get lost. We get lost. We come back. The subject goes away.

What we are at this very moment. What we are already not any more. What we are becoming. Between our pasts, our stories and the sketch of what we become.

The making of an exhibition raises the question of time. Times. Of the conjugation of different times in a space. Spaces. Physical. Conceptual. Fictional. Emotional. Fragments of spaces, which the visitor, in the best of the worlds, will take with him. Possibly. One of these times (among the others - those of the artists, the works, the visitors) is ours, our present time - this intervening period in which we live today, every day, crossed by heterogeneous elements. By thoughts, speeches, images, objects, arrangements, decisions, propositions, regrets, affects. The list goes on, modifies and repeats itself. Word wrap.

Autumn 2010.

We live in an interval. Between letters to come, the smell of Japan and the Parisian rumor, works on the wall, books on the shelves of an apartment in the fourth floor, the memories of our past exhibitions.

This exhibition, which is called

Things slowly curve out of sight

Until they are gone. Afterwards

Only the curve

Remains.

formulates a simple wish, that to suggest the subjective environment in which we are today. As if we were looking at a landscape. Composed of works, objects, words, books, forming the curves of our activity. Its reasons, its intuitions, its doubts, its failures. Rehearsal. Repetition.

… qui va vers l'est en tournant le buste vers le nord et lançant la jambe droite vers le sud, puis le buste vers le sud et la jambe gauche vers le nord… [1]

Ceci est le communiqué de presse d’une exposition qui a déjà eu plusieurs titres et pris différentes configurations, mais qui n’a pourtant pas encore eu lieu, qui pourtant a lieu, qui pourtant aura eu lieu.

Cette exposition aurait pu s’appeler « Le présent est une chose du passé, maintenant ». Elle s’est appelée ainsi quelque temps jusqu’à ce que l’affirmation de cette formule invérifiable se réduise à ce slogan linéaire et tautologique.

Ce qui nous intéressait néanmoins à travers ce titre – le premier – c’est la manière dont il envisage le présent comme un délai dans lequel on habite sans pour autant y résider. Une trace en arrière ou en avant du temps, s’effaçant dès l’instant où elle se formule.

Le contemporain comme nomade du présent.

- Vous croyez ?
- N’interrompez pas, continuons, avançons comme des éclaireurs dans le tâtonnement, dans l’errance, la spéculation, juste pour voir. Et puis nous ne sommes pas sûrs de tenir à démontrer. Mais seulement à voir où cela nous mène.

Au début donc, nous avons tenté de regarder, d’une œuvre à une autre, d’une exposition à une autre, pourquoi aujourd’hui cet attrait pour des images du passé, cet usage de formes, d’histoires et d’images existantes dans de nombreuses pratiques artistiques : de l’appropriation au palimpseste, de l’historiographie à la décontextualisation en passant par la simple remise en circulation.

Comme une manière de prendre position avec ces images et ces récits se traduisant par des opérations de montage, de collage, d’assemblage, de collision venant trancher dans des choses habituellement réunies et en connecter d’autres habituellement séparées. Des opérations ayant pour effet de lier une temporalité à une autre à travers l’observation de leurs trajectoires et de ce qui les sépare. Une fascination de l’intervalle.

… dans la nuit nous cherchons notre passage

Si de tout temps les artistes se sont régulièrement tournés vers le passé et l’histoire, pour y confronter le présent et anticiper le futur, il semble aujourd’hui s’agir davantage d’une tentative de construire une archéologie subjective à partir d’images, d’idées, d’œuvres du passé, dans la perspective d’une (re)distribution fragmentaire du visible.

« Qu’est-ce que le contemporain ? » est le titre de la leçon inaugurale du cours de philosophie donné en 2005 – 2006 par Giorgio Agamben à l’université IUAV de Venise[2]. Ce titre nous ne l’avons jamais considéré pour l’exposition. Mais ce qui nous intéresse ici, c’est la manière dont le philosophe définit le contemporain comme « celui qui ne coïncide pas parfaitement avec son temps ni n’adhère à ses prétentions, et se définit, en ce sens, comme inactuel ; mais précisément pour cette raison, précisément, par cet écart et cet anachronisme, il est plus apte que les autres à percevoir et à saisir son temps », définition qu'il développe par la suite à travers différents processus (physiques, poétiques, phénoménologiques) liés au regard et à la vision.

Il ajoute ainsi que le contemporain est « celui qui fixe le regard sur son temps pour en percevoir non les lumières, mais l’obscurité. (…) Seul peut se dire contemporain celui qui ne se laisse pas aveugler par les lumières du siècle et parvient à saisir en elles la part de l’ombre, leur sombre intimité. » Mais, poursuit-il, « le contemporain n’est pas seulement celui, qui, en percevant l’obscurité du présent, en cerne l’inaccessible lumière ; il est celui qui, par la division et l’interpolation du temps, est en mesure de le transformer et de le mettre en relation avec d’autres temps, de lire l’histoire d’une manière inédite, de la « citer » en fonction d’une nécessité qui ne doit absolument rien à son arbitraire, mais provient d’une exigence à laquelle il ne peut répondre. C’est comme si cette invisible lumière qu’est l’obscurité du présent projetait son ombre sur le passé tandis que celui-ci, frappé par ce faisceau d’ombre, acquérait la capacité de répondre aux ténèbres du moment. »

Cette exposition aurait pu s’appeler « Quelles visions dans le noir de la lumière » ou « Quelles visions dans le noir sans ombre de lumière et d’ombre », telle que s’exclame une voix dans Compagnie de Samuel Beckett. « Yeux clos écarquillés » écrit-il, constamment à la recherche dans son œuvre de la lumière, jusque dans les modalités de son obscurcissement.

… l’inéluctable modalité du visible

L’exposition s’est enfin appelée « l’hypothèse du cristal », suite à la découverte de l’existence du cristal d’Islande, une variété de calcite à la propriété de double réfraction. Explications. Un objet placé derrière un cristal d'Islande apparaît dédoublé, comme en léger décalage avec lui-même. Une double réfraction que l’on pourrait attribuer à un phénomène temporel : si l'image de cet objet apparaît dédoublée, c'est parce qu'à travers ce cristal la lumière voyage à des vitesses différentes ; l'une des images est plus ancienne que l'autre et bifurque dans une autre direction.

D’une certaine manière, cette hypothèse de la coexistence d’une double temporalité fait écho aux œuvres des artistes réunies dans l’exposition dans lesquelles certains anachronismes semblent être là pour mieux exprimer le présent dans lequel ils s’inscrivent.

La figure de l’aveugle y croise ainsi celle de l’ébloui, les standards de la représentation, la circulation des images, la manière de les montrer, de les représenter, la distance à laquelle nous regardons les choses du passé sont là quelques éléments qui entourent cette exposition et les œuvres qui s’y trouveront. On peut parfois dire les choses en décrivant uniquement les contours de ce qui les contient.

This is the press release for an exhibition that has already had several titles and assumed a variety of forms, and yet has still not taken place, and which nonetheless takes place, and which nonetheless will have taken place.

This exhibition could have been called “Present is a thing of the past, now”. That is what it was called for a while until the affirmation of this unverifiable formula was reduced to a linear and tautological slogan.

What interested us about the use of this title – the original – is the way it portrays the present like a time span within which one lives without residing there. A step forward or backward disappearing the instant it is taken.

The contemporary as a nomad of the present.

- You think so?
- Don’t interrupt, let’s go on, let’s go ahead like scouts feeling their way through trial and error, wandering and speculation, simply in order to see. And then we are uncertain about wanting to demonstrate. But just to see where that brings us.

Thus, at the beginning, we tried to look from one work to another, from one exhibition to another, to understand why there is this attraction today to images from the past, this use of forms, of stories, of existing elements in many artistic practices: from appropriation to palimpsest, from historiography to decontextualization by simply putting things back into circulation.

Like a way of “taking position” with these images and these stories which result in montage, collage, assemblage and collision that differentiate things that are usually related and connect others that are usually separated. Operations that link one temporality to another by observing their trajectories and what separates them. A fascination with the interval.

… looking for our way in the night

Artists have always looked to the past and at history on a regular basis to compare the present and anticipate the future. But today it would appear to be more of an attempt to build a subjective archeology based on images, ideas, works from the past, in the perspective of a fragmentary (re)distribution of the visible.

“What is the contemporary?” is the title of the first lesson in the philosophy class given in 2005 – 2006 by Giorgio Agamben at the university IUAV in Venice [2]. What interests us here is how the philosopher defines “those who are truly contemporary, who truly belong to their time, as those who neither perfectly coincide with it nor adjust themselves to its demands. They are thus in this sense irrelevant. But precisely because of these conditions, precisely through this rejection and this anachronism, they are more capable than others of perceiving and grasping their own time”. He then develops this definition through different processes (physics, poetics, phenomenological) related to the gaze and vision.

He thus adds that “the contemporary is he who firmly holds his gaze on his own time so as to perceive not its light, but rather its darkness. (…) The ones who can call themselves contemporary are only those who do not allow themselves to be blinded by the lights of the century, and so manage to get a glimpse of the shadows in those lights, of their intimate obscurity”. But, he continues, “the contemporary is not only the one who, perceiving the darkness of the present, grasps a light that can never reach its destiny; he is also the one who, dividing and interpolating time, is capable of transforming it and putting it in relation with other times. He is able to read history in unforeseen ways, to “cite it” according to a necessity that does not arise in any way from his will, but from an exigency to which he cannot not respond. It is as if this invisible light that is the darkness of the present cast its shadow on the past, so that the past, touched by this shadow, acquired the ability to respond to the darkness of the now”.

This exhibition could have been called “What visions in the dark of light” or “What visions in the shadeless dark of light and shade” , as a voice exclaims in Company by Samuel Beckett. “Eyes wide shut”, he writes, in his constant quest for light in his work, all the way down to the ways it is darkened.

… the ineluctable modality of the visible

In the end, the exhibition was called “The Crystal Hypothesis” after a variety of calcite that demonstrates double refraction. Explanations. An object placed behind an Iceland crystal appears double, slightly shifted with respect to the original. A double refraction that may be attributed to a temporal phenomenon: if the image of this object appears double, it is because light rays traveling through the crystal split into fast and slow beams; one of the images is older than the other and the rays are bent at different angles – which are affected by the speed – as they exit the crystal.

In a way, this hypothesis of the co-existence of a double temporality echoes artists’ works in the exhibition in which certain anachronisms seem to exist to better express the present of which they are a part. The blind figure thus crosses that of the dazzled figure, the standards of representation, the circulation of images, how they are shown, represented, the distance from which we look at the things of the past are just a few elements that surround this exhibition and the works in it.

Sometimes it is possible to say things by describing just the contours of that which contains them.

Le grain de ce livre est très fin, il a le velouté de la peau humaine et jamais il n’a l’aspect d’une peau d’âne ; point de grande doctrine ou de thèse, point de belles explications en trois points. (...) toutes les explications sont données par le contour et le contour des paragraphes nous donne la clef des destins comme le contour d’un visage nous donne la clef d’un caractère.
C’est effectivement de contours dont il sera question, de ces différents éléments généralement associés à la présentation d'une oeuvre, à l'écriture d'une exposition, de sa communication à sa médiation en passant par son archive.”

étant donné ce qui a été écrit précédemment,

L’esthétique de la lacune se revendique des îles,îlots et archipels rompant la plénitude océanique et la continuitécontinentale.

Elle navigue au sein de récits interrompus, notes debas de pages disparues, archives incomplètes, tables des matières sans suite,histoires sans fin, mythes aux oubliettes, objets aux origines douteuses, formesfantômes aux trajets tortueux, chefs-d’œuvre inconnus.

Au gré de cette discontinuité, elle célèbre le deuilde la totalité et pratique l’art d’accommoder les restes.

L’ouverture abrupte est sa symphonie ; sonétendard, un patchwork.

Elle réfute l’exigence classique de l’œuvre fondéesur la cohérence et l’achèvement : toute œuvre est irrésolue, plurielle etintroduit à une dissémination du sens.

Elle rejette l’unité et l’harmonie, l’homogénéité etla continuité au profit de morceaux erratiques et solitaires, de situations auxmultiples strates, de fragments épars et discrets, permutables et suppressiblesà l’infini.

Les blancs du discours et les intervalles du récit, lesintrigues et les personnages secondaires, sont ses attributs, les interruptionset les ruptures de liaisons, les pointillés de l’histoire, ses modesopératoires.

La fragmentation, l’hétérogénéité, la transcendancetextuelle et formelle – la trans-formalité, la dynamique combinatoire sont lesformes brisées et arbitraires qui définissent la mauvaise foi de ses critères.

La somme des parties n’est égale qu’à la somme desparties : elle zigzague en évitant toute rhétorique du développement.

Par disruption et parcellisation d’objetsspéculatifs, elle provoque des associations abusives, des malentendusinachevés.

Elle existe par l’ellipse afin d’émietter l’univers.

The aesthetics of the lacuna stands for theislands, islets and archipelagos breaking the plenitude of oceans and thecontinental continuity.

It sails in interrupted stories with missingfootnotes, incomplete archives, tables of contents without further action,endless stories, myths into oblivion, objects with dubious origins, ghost formswith tortuous trajectories, unknown or missing masterworks.

In appreciation of this aestheticdiscontinuity, it celebrates the mourning of totality and practices the art ofaccommodating the remains.

The abrupt opening is its symphony; its flag, apatchwork.

It refutes the classic requirement of the workbased on perfection, consistency and completion: every work is plural,unresolved and premises a dissemination of meaning.

It rejects unity and harmony, homogeneity andcontinuity for the benefit of erratic and solitary pieces, multi-stratifiedsituations, subtle and scattered changeling fragments, removable to infinity.

The white spaces between the words, the silencebetween the speeches and the gaps in the stories, subsidiary plots andsecondary characters, are its attributes; interruptions and breaks inconnections, the dotted lines of history, its modus operandi.

Fragmentation, heterogeneity, textual andformal transcendence - trans-formality - combinatory dynamics are the brokenand arbitrary forms that define the bad faith of its criteria.

The sum of the parts is only equal to the sumof the parts, it zigzags to avoid any rhetoric of development.

By disruption and fragmentation of speculativeobjects, it causes loose associations, incomplete misunderstandings.

It exists by the ellipse to crumble theuniverse.

Troisième chapitre d’une collaboration avec les artistes Mariana Castillo Deball, Alex Cecchetti, Will Holder, Benoît Maire et Falke Pisano entamée à l’occasion de la résidence des XXIIe Ateliers Internationaux du Frac des Pays de la Loire entre septembre et novembre 2008, cet ouvrage anticipe, prolonge ou transpose les œuvres présentées dans les expositions Chapitre 1 (les situations discrètes) du 8 novembre 2008 au 22 février 2009 au Frac des Pays de la Loire à Carquefou et Chapitre 2 (la répétition) du 7 mars au 3 mai 2009 au Parc culturel de Rentilly, à l‘invitation du Frac Île-de-France.

Conçues comme les premiers chapitres d‘un livre à venir, ces deux expositions ont réuni des œuvres dont les combinaisons traçaient les contours de situations narratives, que les textes écrits ou réédités par les artistes dans ce Chapitre 3 viennent réactiver. Essais théoriques sous forme de nouvelles, scripts de performances, manifeste ou scénario de film, ces récits autorisés suggèrent des trajectoires croisées et des transformations constantes et mutuelles entre langage, idées et formes dans les pratiques de ces artistes.

Une autre préface où le lecteur de la Composition n°1 (1965) de Marc Saporta est prié de battre ces pagescomme un jeu de cartes. De couper, s’il le désire, de la main gauche, commechez une cartomancienne. L’ordre dans lequel les feuillets sortiront du jeuorientera le destin de X. Car le temps et l’ordre des événements règlent la vieplus que la nature de ces événements. [...] De l’enchaînement descirconstances, dépend que l’histoire finisse bien ou mal. Une vie se composed’éléments multiples. Mais le nombre des compositions possibles est infini.

Les situations discrètes. Unplateau nu où l’on dit que le premier acte est celui de l’exposition.Structures narratives à géométrie variable. Polyphonies.

Le socle. Je l’ai entendue désigner desobjets matériels par un groupe de mots abstraits et de noms propres.Lorsqu’elle s’est tut, les objets ont continué à parler, dit Monsieur Teste enparlant d’autre chose.

Traductions (II). Où l’on voit des mots traduire des formesgéométriques blanches et colorées pour construire une sculpture.

Les mots dont elle se sertparfois sont si curieusement tenus par sa voix ou éclairés par sa phrase queleur poids est altéré, leur valeur nouvelle. Parfois ils perdent tout leursens, ils paraissent remplir uniquement une place vide dont le termedestinataire est douteux ou encore imprévupar la langue.

Un chapitre vide en MDF. De quelques obstacles. Où l’exploration dela substance des objets comme chose en soi se mue en découverte de la languecomme substance.

Third chapter of a collaboration with the artists Mariana Castillo Deball, Alex Cecchetti, Will Holder, Benoît Maire and Falke Pisano, begun on the occasion of the residence of the 22nd International Studios of Frac des Pays de la Loire between September and November 2008, this book anticipates, prolongs or transposes the works presented in the exhibitions Chapter 1 (the discrete situations) from November 8th, 2008 to February 22nd, 2009 at Frac des Pays de la Loire in Carquefou and Chapter 2 (the repetition) from March 7th to May 3rd, 2009 in the Parc culturel de Rentilly, upon the invitation of the Frac Ile-de-France.

Conceived as the first chapters of a book, these two exhibitions gathered together works whose combinations drew the outlines of narrative situations, that the texts written or republished by the artists in this Chapter 3 come to reactivate. Theoretical essays in the form of short stories, scripts of performances, manifesto or movie scenario, these authorized narratives suggest crossed trajectories and constant and mutual transformations between language, ideas and forms in the practices of these artists.

Contents

Arrival. The characters.The castle and the parking lot’s life in the countryside. Where we gathertogether without requiring a result. Therain retreat. Sources, drops, puddles. The waves. The production of objectsto come.

The words of others. Reading what is alreadythere. Reading what has not been written yet. Read and re-read. This wasn’t thefirst time he heard that.

Another foreword in which the reader ofMarc Saporta’s Composition #1 (1965)is requested toshuffle these pages like a deck of cards; to cut, if he likes, with his lefthand, as at a fortune-teller’s. The order the pages then assume will orient X’sfate.  “For the time and order of events control a man’s life more than thenature of such events. (…) Whether the story ends well or badly depends on theconcatenation of circumstances. A life is composed of many elements. But thenumber of possible compositions is infinite.”

Discreetsituations. An empty set where it is said that the first act is one ofexhibition. Narrative structures with variable geometry. Polyphonies.

Plinth. I’ve heard her talking about concreteobjects using a group of abstract words and proper names. When she stopped, theobjects kept on talking, says Monsieur Teste, speaking of something else.

Circle of fragments (consider revising). Diagonalsciences. New fabric of past quotations. Irresponsiblehedgehog. Broken forms. Classic example. Theappropriation of the appropriated veiled message.

Translations. Where one sees white andcoloured geometrical shapes translating words to build up a sculpture.

Thingsthat have been said again. She told him something. He answered: “This may bethe first time these words have been pronounced.”

Breathing

Repetition. Repetition. An old manor withcoloured walls where the works reiterate or start new situations. Instructionsand archives. Rehearsal Vs repetition.

Translations (II). Where one sees words translatingwhite and coloured geometrical shapes to build up a sculpture.

The words that she uses aresometimes so curiously held by her voice or informed by her sentence that theirweight is altered, with a new value. Sometimes, they lose all meaning; theyonly seem to fill an empty space where the term receiver is questionable oreven unexpected by the language.

A chapter without MDF. Some obstacles. Where theexploration of the substance of the objects as a thing in itself becomes adiscovery of language as substance.

How does one transmit the memory of an artwork or of an exhibition? Can an exhibition become the souvenir of other ones? Can an artwork and by extension an exhibition be conceived as the memory of itself? And how to turn 25 square meters into a temporal experience?

Following on an on-going dialogue and a close collaboration with a moving group of artists, the works presented in this exhibition will be considered as souvenirs of previous ones, taking various forms of appearance, more or less remote from their original ones, acting as reminiscences of past situations. They will either be fragmentary or incomplete, some will be copies, documents or traces of themselves, others will only be told, performed or discussed in order to echo the way they might be remembered in the future. Drawing the dotted lines of previous projects, this exhibition aims at becoming an encounter stage of different spatial and temporal trajectories. Based on combinatory dynamics, the display will stage different situations, reflecting a process evolving during the course of these three days.

Blue:

How (if still) is it possible to make something without anyone knowing of what it is, but being very sure of its existence as well?

Purple & Orange:

One possible hypothesis of this exhibition so far is to think of it as a black box - not in the opposite sense of a white cube - but as the usually bright orange's data recorder used in aircrafts to record everything occurring during a flight and which are only to be opened and examined after an accident.(1)

We propose to consider the black box as a theoretical tool to question outside elements - knowledge, allusions, memories, references, exchanges - appearing within the processes of creation and exhibition of a work.

This “black box” thing actually comes from a refused proposal to an open call we submitted few years ago for a one-year exhibition program of an art centre. (2)

The idea beyond this proposal was to invite artists to produce works for a series of exhibitions, which were not necessarily intended to be seen. This also departed from the shared thought that the nicest exhibitions are sometimes the ones that one hasn't seen but has been told.

Red:

I'm not so worried about how the work is seen when it's seen in person. It's never 'about' something. Rather it is something. But obviously there is a distance between the work and the documentation, so I am glad that the work translates. (…) I try to avoid turning the work into a game of charades, to reduce it to a simple equation of, 'try to guess what I'm thinking,' but certainly the work has origins.

Green:

(…)

Red:

You start as a modern painting, you end as a tile.

You start in the realm of art and end in the realm of decoration.

You start on the wall and end on the floor. (…)

It made me realize that things are not made to look like the time in which they were created (what would that look like anyways?). They are always intended to conjure the past or be ahead of their time.

Green:

(...), answering from too far to be understood.

Red:

Even above a sincere interest in the simplicity and singularity of materials is a belief in the ability of the inanimate object to communicate, a belief that certain objects and materials retain essential characteristics of their origins, the time and place they are from.

Orange:

According to the French mathematician and founder of the catastrophe theory René Thom, the systems theory essentialy tries to report what takes place in a « black box » by hiding the object of study while injecting it some matter and energy then by observing what’s going out of it. The purpose aimed by this practice is to be able to study the behavior of the system from the point of view of inputs and outputs, without breaking the walls of the box to look at what there is inside.

Blue:

Maybe this show is not about moving stones? Or maybe it is exactly about that - stones moving without us touching them? Having in mind that me will not travel - it is strange, as my thoughts are already on the way.

Yellow:

I like the idea of a disappearing image slightly moving to our memory. I made a Blueprint poster with disappearing ink producing that effect: when you leave it in the ambient light, the image slowly disappears, depending on how strong the light is, and for how long it is exposed. The more you use its visibility the more it disappears. On the poster, it reads “No Patents on Idea” which comes from a letter by Thomas Jefferson to Isaac McPherson, 13 August 1813:

“Stable ownership is the gift of social law, and is given late in the progress of society. It would be curious then, if an idea, the fugitive fermentation of an individual brain, could, of natural right, be claimed in exclusive and stable property.
If nature has made any one thing less susceptible than all others of exclusive property, it is the action of the thinking power called an idea, which an individual may exclusively possess as long as he keeps it to himself; but the moment it is divulged, it forces itself into the possession of every one, and the receiver cannot dispossess himself of it.
Its peculiar character, too, is that no one possesses the less, because every other possesses the whole of it. He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. That ideas should freely spread from one to another over the globe, for the moral and mutual instruction of man, and improvement of his condition, seems to have been peculiarly and benevolently designed by nature, when she made them, like fire, expansible over all space, without lessening their density in any point, and like the air in which we breathe, move, and have our physical being, incapable of confinement or exclusive appropriation. »(3)

Green:

Blue:

Can I occupy some space without taking anything for myself?

Green:

(…), still smiling on the phone.

Purple:

We could try to consider together this exhibition as a programmed accident allowing to determine perhaps some of the inputs and outputs of the different works and of their possible relationships. To quote René Thom, “the only conceivable way of unveiling a black box, is to play with it”.

Red:

When I say I believed in the ability of the inanimate object to communicate I mean it, but these things can sometimes have a mind of their own, and you sometimes think you know what it says to you, and kind of hope it says something similar to somebody else but how could it possibly be the same? (…) I prefer to think the work begins where I stop.

Purple:

It would also underline how the elaboration of a work of art is far from being a linear process as well as the distortion or the confusion its reception can create according to the exhibition context. How mistakes and misunderstandings (whether in the conception, the production or the interpretation of the work) can produce something on the way.

Blue:

The piece you've mentioned has its own internal logic that makes each part of the work 'responsible' for canceling the other, until there's nothing left, or to be more precise - until a drawing is shown - which is actually a side-effect as it was made as an example of what the watercolor (that is being put in a gallery desk drawer and remains not shown) is about. The pattern, or the lines that makes the complete drawing are based on the process of drawing itself.

But again - the drawing is being made with an idea of exclusion from a show and so when it is crumbled (failure) it is being translated into 3-dimensional object, and when it gets flattened back - the remaining 'landscape' spells the intention of a drawn structure.

Then, not having any illusion that anyone will ever invest any time into it, I chose to leave it mysterious and mute until the gallery is closed, until I can play the track 'Minus One' from Broadcast and not have any problem with the copyright holders.

Red:

The work is partially a fundamental refusal to acknowledge how complicated the world is. The work is a willful ignorance.

Blue:

Deleuze/Guatarri were writing on 'abstract machines' - have we seen them?

Green:

(…), nodding his head.

Red:

One is white with a silver linocane pattern and a yellow background.

One is a gray stucco frame with a copper union jack pattern with a blue background.

One is black with a gold cloverfield pattern and a pink background.

(…)

I like the essence of the work to be able to be described in one simple sentence, one gesture, one move.

Blue:

In the end it is a work with missing parts only (it is like a story that was shaken in a hat and then read).

Red:

If I were a contractor I would have to build a whole building. If I were a director I would have to make a whole feature film. If I were a novelist I would have to write a whole book. And there would be somebody else's program, the bottom line to consider.

Instead I can make just one part of a building, one scene from a movie or one word from a book. Just parts, but the parts can imply much more then the whole if they're the right parts.

Purple & Orange:

The ideas you already sent are growing very nicely down here and we hope to have Federal flowers by February. Perhaps will they also grow somewhere else?

Green:

Chère Fabienne,

Un des objectifs de cette exposition, telle que nous l’avons conçue, est de voir des « Federal flowers » pousser à Brest entre le 5 février et le 5 mars 2010. Nous ne sommes pas certains de savoir à quoi ces fleurs ressemblent encore, mais nous espérons néanmoins que les œuvres réunies ici puissent stimuler leur éclosion, si vous en prenez soin et que vous les arrosez régulièrement.

Les œuvres, il y en a seize dans cette exposition, qui, comme l’a dit Bruno Persat, n’est autre qu’une hypothèse provenant d’un vécu partagé.

Certaines n’ont pas d’auteur tandis que d’autres en ont plusieurs, certaines n’ont pas de titre, l’une d’entre elles a été conçue pour être exclue de l’exposition tandis que d’autres ne devraient pas y être. Certaines disparaissent progressivement pour n’exister que dans notre mémoire, d’autres ne sont complètes que lorsque la galerie ferme pour la nuit et qu’il n’y a personne pour les voir. Excepté les fantômes évidemment.

Il y a une peinture murale de Pratchaya Phinthong affirmant qu’il n’y a pas de brevet sur les idées réalisée avec de l’encre s’effaçant progressivement comme un lent fondu au blanc.

Cette peinture, elle regarde des objets sur le mur d’en face qui sont aussi des peintures du même artiste, qui sont les mêmes, les mêmes mais différentes. Celles-ci sont accrochées sur une peinture murale peinte et effacée à bout de bras, matérialisant la présence en creux des personnes qui l’ont réalisées et d’autres personnes encore, avant elles.

Copie, plagiat, reprise, appropriation, détournement sont des mots que certains pourraient employer pour parler de ces œuvres. On peut les laisser faire.

Ces œuvres, il nous semble, montrent autant qu’elles dissimulent. Les trois grilles de ventilation de Zak Kitnick sont détournées de leur fonction première (cacher le plus discrètement possible des conduits d’aération) pour laisser apparaître les motifs ornementaux qui les composent. La boîte noire de Bruno Persat a beau être ouverte, elle n'en reste pas moins fermée.

Il y a une étagère et une table sérigraphiée à l’encre argentée sur lesquelles reposent quelques objets qu’on ne peut pas louper. Parmi eux, un ensemble de livres (il y en a 26 en tout, 23 + 2 + 1 – nous vous laissons découvrir lesquels). Ces livres sont en attente d’être écrits même si dans leur vie antérieure fictionnelle admirablement écrite par Richard Brautigan, leurs auteurs s’y soient tout aussi admirablement entrepris. Nous les avons disposées là où le cœur nous en disait.

Il y a aussi un dessin de Gintaras Didziapetris représentant une forme géométrique, un dessin froissé comme s’il avait été raté, puis défroissé et encadré. Un dessin qui ne devrait pas être là a priori. Un dessin comme le document d’une œuvre qu’on ne voit pas dans l’exposition.

Certains pensent que les quatre fils à plomb installés par Bruno Persat sont des gouttes de pluie. Nous ne sommes après tout pas en Bretagne pour rien.

Que dire alors de l’ampoule allumée reposant sur le sol ? Peut-être faudra-t-il aller chercher la réponse dans la symétrie de certaines photographies de l’espace projetées sur un mur non loin ?

Comme vous le voyez, c’est une manie, cette exposition pose davantage de questions qu’elle n’apporte de réponse.

Les textes pointus peuvent parfois piquer les gens qui les lisent. Pour arrondir les angles et terminer sur une douceur, voici quelques mots de Lawrence Weiner qui nous ont accompagné dans cette exposition :

Que cela en fasse quelque chose d'intéressant à regarder est supplémentaire, c'est comme une information de plus c'est tout.

Pourquoi avons-nous besoin d'art ? L'art est probablement la seule chose pour laquelle il n'y ait pas une raison vraie. Pas de raison, pas d'excuse.

Je pense que l'art ne doit pas s'imposer il doit être présenté et si vous pensez que vous le voulez, prenez le. L'information est là. Mais si vous ne le voulez pas, je ne vais vous brutaliser ou vous convaincre. C'est suffisant pour moi de présenter le travail. Et c'est à vous de l'accepter ou de le rejeter.

Ceci peut être fait chez vous, vous pouvez vivre, vous pouvez aussi le garder en mémoire pour le reste de votre vie. Où que vous alliez, vous pouvez la construire, et l'avoir pour toute votre vie. Ce n'est pas un objet unique et précieux, c'est une idée unique mais qui a cinquante, soixante ou des centaines de représentation. Et chaque fois c'est nouveau. Vous pouvez le perdre, vous pouvez l'abîmer, rien ne peut lui arriver, il est là pour toujours et c'est tout.

Avec un peu de chance, vous devriez encore trouver quelques graines de fleurs fédérales dans votre bureau. Prenez-en soin.

"Ici, Tes yeux sont des lacs dans lesquels je me noie !"

Where does copper come from ?

Where does copper come from ? Where do copper wire and its braiding come from ? Where copper comes from is what this work is all about. Where copper wire comes from is a precious problem, I mean working with copper is precious to the extent that the question, where does copper come from ? is precious.

Anyway and above all copper comes from the earth and respects the earth because it is an internal product of the earth. Man has given the investigation and discovery of copper the brevity of space and the depth of time. The art of copper wire rediscovers the brevity of space and the depth of time. Copper follows all the discoveries of man. It reproposes, whole and brief, the life that he lives in space and in the complex of reality.

The brevity and intensity of copper discovered in historic time by means of wire is conversion, and conversion in this case is art. In historic time wood was discovered through art. Stone, iron, and gold were found, discovered the second time by art and only in art. Art in reality is the discovery of stone, wood, and gold, and so art requires today that copper and its wire again be brought into the light. Thus the child of the earth is restored to light.

Because art is cosmic in being art of restoring, rediscovering, a second trial of matter. Copper stretched to a wire, that is matter stretched to a wire, is the disposition of copper, that is, of matter, in time. Copper wire is the historic time of copper. First there was copper, today copper wire is its historic time.

Spider-floss on human and heavy everyday reality. The ability to fit into everyday reality. The everyday dimension is saved through art. Art does not rear up against the unknown except through daily events. The unknown is the child of the earth, the will of the planet.

Wire is the will of historic time, humanized by man, then placed in the heaven of daily events. Daily events work like a support for time because daily life compels us to a daily relation with matter and its logic is our own. This means connectiong the art of copper to the historic time of wire. To its absolute poetry of the present the past and the near future. Art is born in the birth of copper, everyday reality is reborn in the form of copper wire. It is reborn in its own child.

We will never be able to become wire because we are not primary elements, whereas copper is a primary element and it has its wire. Thus art, which is excitement, leaves the art of excitement for the art of birth. All the birth of wire through its development and its braiding in pure visibility. How is it possible to give the wire a home. Is it the home of the wire ?

Is it the vivisection of the home through the wire ? Or is it the wire that fits linearly into the world of the new ? Through its will to be in time the child of the earth, that is, copper. Time running along the wire presents itself to us. Matter running alone the wire brings to light the quality of being its own child, thus winning the immaterial domination of the earth !

Sergueï Paradjanov, Sayat Nova, La Couleur de la grenade, 1969

Au départ de cette exposition, il y a la critique du film Sayat Nova, La Couleur de la grenade (1969) de Sergueï Paradjanov publiée dans Libération en 1982 par Serge Daney et portée à notre connaissance par Isabelle Cornaro à l’occasion de Quatre Livres, soirée de lecture conçue à l’invitation de Section 7 Books et Kadist Art Foundation en février 2008 et inscrite dans la programmation de « 220 jours ».

Succession de tableaux vivants dont la construction s’apparente aux techniques de représentations picturales comme aux procédés du collage, Sayat Nova raconte sur un mode allégorique différents épisodes de la vie de ce poète arménien du XVIIIe siècle. Dans un rapport quasi fétichiste aux objets et à leurs relations, Paradjanov filme chaque plan dans une frontalité nette, sans concession. La profondeur est gommée en fixant un fond à l’image : « il m’a semblé qu’une image statique, au cinéma, peut avoir une profondeur telle une miniature, une plastique et une dynamique internes » (Sergueï Paradjanov).

Référence à l’art médiéval et à la conception de la représentation de l’espace à cette époque, chaque scène de ce film-exposition est composée par un feuilletage de plans superposés à partir d’une surface d’inscription définissant un rythme de lecture particulier : le temps est exprimé par l’espace, et l’espace en une juxtaposition de lieux qui constituent autant de moments différents de l’histoire. Pour reprendre les termes de Serge Daney, « dans cette série d’icônes-séquences, une image ne suit pas l’autre, elle la remplace. Il n’y a pas de mouvement de caméra dans ce film, pas de liens entre les images. Nous sommes leur seul point commun. »

Si par extension nous sommes effectivement le seul point commun des (chaînes d’)images qui nous entourent, comment éprouver leur construction et les relations qu’elles entretiennent aux autres – passées, présentes et à venir – ainsi qu’aux espaces de représentation dans lesquelles elles s’insèrent ?

Des discussions avec les artistes qui ont entre autres animé l’exposition « 220 jours » au texte de Daney en passant par le film de Paradjanov, la construction d’un espace-temps particulier du regard a inspiré l’exposition « Les Feuilles ». En invitant des artistes de différentes générations dont les œuvres interrogent – à nos yeux - l’origine, la transmission et la circulation des images, des formes, des histoires par des opérations de cadrage, de montage et de collage, nous avons souhaité mettre en perspective, en multipliant les points de fuite, différents types de construction du visible.

Par le choix d’une perspective, l’auteur d’une image révèle en quelque sorte sa vision du monde, la façon dont il envisage de le faire voir, et la place qu’il s’est lui-même attribuée par rapport à cet espace. Répartie en deux espaces d’exposition parisiens – dans un Module du Palais de Tokyo et à Super – cette exposition articule des parcours et des points de vue dans lesquels les images, les objets, les sujets s’enchaînent les uns aux autres dans un déroulement discontinu pour finir par se raccorder dans notre imagination, éventuellement.
